Dentistry

Dental examinations are performed using sedation at Duchy Equine Vets. This is to ensure that your horse is as relaxed as possible, including their tongue and facial muscles, allowing us to thoroughly examine the whole mouth - especially the difficult to reach back teeth. Routine treatments, diastema management, overgrowth correction & some extractions can all be carried out at your yard.

Routine healthcare

Prevention is better than cure! We would prefer if every horse, pony, and donkey were vaccinated for tetanus as a minimum.

Duchy Equine Vets can help and advise you on vaccination, worming, dental care, and anything else in as much or little detail as you like. We are always happy to talk horses and chat through any concerns or queries you may have.

Reproductive services

Duchy Equine Vets will be with you at every step of the journey from deciding whether to put your mare in foal to having a foal by her side.

We provide artificial insemination services using fresh or chilled semen and can help you with all aspects of managing pregnancy and birth including vaccination protocols for the pregnant mare and newborn foal checks.

Lameness & poor performance

Duchy Equine Vets have a wealth of experience in untangling the mysteries of poor performance and lameness in horses. Full lameness investigations can be performed at your yard depending on your facilities. We are experienced in nerve blocking and medicating joints, working closely with local farriers and physiotherapists to enable you to keep your horses performing at their best. We are lucky to have the very latest battery operated, wireless digital x-ray and ultrasound machines that provide almost instant images that can be easily shared with orthopaedic experts and farriers, should that be necessary.

Pre-purchase examinations

We aim to carry out a thorough and complete veterinary examination to identify and assess those factors of a veterinary nature that may affect a horse’s suitability for its intended use, so that the prospective purchaser may make an informed decision as to whether or not to proceed with their chosen purchase. It is important to understand that differing circumstances demand different solutions.
Both Charlie and Julie have completed countless pre-purchase examinations over the years, including 5-stage, 2-stage, and bespoke examinations. We can also perform pre-purchase radiographs if required. Please call the office to discuss the best option for you.

investigations

Decades of experience, portable equipment, and use of a courier service to deliver samples to a specialist equine laboratory in good time means that at Duchy Equine Vets, most medical problems can be investigated stable side. For those cases needing intensive monitoring or specialist help such as colic surgery, CT or MRI, we have close links with referral hospitals to ensure the best possible 24-hour care for your horses.
