Our Services

Dentistry
Sedation is included in dental examinations, so we can thoroughly assess the whole mouth, including the back teeth.

A wide range of routine treatments and procedures can be performed at the yard from floating and diastema management to extractions.

Lameness & poor performance
Duchy Equine Vets have a wealth of experience in untangling the mysteries of poor performance and lameness in horses.  Full lameness investigations can be performed at your yard depending on your facilities.  We are experienced in nerve blocking and medicating joints, working closely with local farriers and physiotherapists to enable you to keep your horses performing at their best. We are lucky to have the very latest battery operated, wireless digital x-ray and ultrasound machines that provide almost instant images that can be easily shared with orthopaedic experts and farriers, should that be necessary.

Pre-purchase examinations
We aim to carry out a thorough and complete veterinary examination to identify and assess those factors of a veterinary nature that may affect a horse’s suitability for its intended use, so that the prospective purchaser may make an informed decision as to whether or not to proceed with their chosen purchase. It is important to understand that differing circumstances demand different solutions.
Both Charlie and Iain have completed countless pre-purchase examinations over the years, including  5-stage, 2-stage, and bespoke examinations. We can also perform pre-purchase radiographs if required. Please call the office to discuss the best option for you.

Medical
investigations
Most medical investigations can be carried out at the yard. Our vets have decades of experience in equine medicine and bring portable equipment for ultrasound, gastroscopy, respiratory endoscopy, and blood sampling.

Samples are collected by courier and processed by a specialist equine laboratory, keeping turnaround times short.

For cases requiring intensive monitoring, colic surgery, CT or MRI, we work closely with referral hospitals to ensure continuity of care.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is most effective as a course of treatments. Our package of 4 treatments includes visits and sedation. Conditions we commonly treat include back pain, muscle tension, sacroiliac discomfort, and poor performance or reluctance to work.
Laser Surgery
We provide this service in partnership with The Flicka Foundation. The majority of procedures are performed standing, using sedation and local anaesthetic, with general anaesthesia reserved for larger lesions or those in difficult-to-reach locations. Part of the fee goes to the Flicka Foundation to help fund their work.
Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy is the only way to definitively diagnose gastric ulcers in horses, and to distinguish between squamous and glandular ulcers, which require different treatments. The procedure takes around 20-30 minutes and the visit usually lasts an hour in total. The horse is sedated, a small camera is passed through the nose into the stomach, and findings can be discussed on the yard the same day.

Horses need to fast overnight before the procedure to allow a clear view of the stomach lining. We schedule gastroscopies as early-morning appointments to keep the fasting period as short as possible. A follow-up scope at 28-30 days is typically recommended to confirm healing.
